Paterski with a solo win and overall lead in Tour of Małopolska

Maciej Paterski soloed to victory on stage 2 of Tour of Małopolska, taking over the lead in the general classification.

Info: Stage 2, June 10th, Kokotów/Centrum Logistyczne 7R – Stary Sącz, 143km

Course: hilly

How it unfolded

The breakaway of the day was established at around 20km mark and it included Andrea Borso (Adria Mobil), Mateusz Komar (Vostar), Bartłomiej Matysiak (Hurom), Piotr Skarżyński (Domin) and Yauhen Sobal (Mińsk). They gained almost 3 minutes on the bunch, but it was reduced drastically when they entered tougher terrain.

With 65km to go GC contenders launched their moves and among them were Maciej Paterski and Łukasz Owsian. The former attacked from the new leading group, alongside Adam Stachowiak (Voster). They built up 2-minute gap over 30-man chasing bunch, with CCC Sprandi Polkowice’s Owsian, Michal Schlegel, Patryk Stosz and leader jersey wearer, Kamil Zieliński (Domin).

At that point it was raining heavily, but it didn’t disturb Paterski. He pushed hard, maintaining the lead and dropping Stachowiak with 10km to go. Chasers were about minute behind and it was enough for CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider to hold on and solo to victory. Patryk Stosz was the fastest from the second group, which came in 1:04 behind, making it 1-2 for the “orange squad”.

Overall winner of Szlakiem Walk Majora Hubala made a big step towards taking second consecutive victory in Polish stage event, as he leads in GC with 1:07 advantage over Gasper Katrasnik (Adria Mobil).

The course suited attackers, since it was all up-and-down. I picked the right moment to attack and went by myself. Adam Stachowiak joined me and we worked together until 10km to go. This is when I decided to go away and leave him behind, since he was not able to pull as hard as earlier in the stage – Maciej Paterski explained. – Just before the start I didn’t feel that strong, but that was also the case during Szlakiem Walk Majora Hubala, when I was trying to find my rhythm during the stage. Today the opening of the race was not easy, but as soon as we got to the first GPM my sensations got much better and legs started to spin very well. Heavy rain played in my favor, since I like when it’s cooler. I didn’t even put on an extra layer, I just kept pushing.
