After the last stage, which featured cross wind and splits in the peloton, Leszek Pluciński finished Tour des Fjords in 15th place overall.
Info: Stage 5, May 28th, Hinna Park – Stavanger, 163km
Weather: cloudy, rainy
Course: undulating (two categorized climbs)
How it unfolded
Albert Timmer (Team Sunweb), Jerome Baugnies (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Kevin Van Melsen (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Rune Almindsø Andersen (ColoQuick CULT) broke clear with 20km into the stage and later gained 4 minutes on the peloton.
That gap was irrelevant that day though, since halfway through the stage peloton picked up the pace in cross winds and split in few pieces. Main GC favorites managed to stay in the front, but Leszek Pluciński, highest placed in GC CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider and Jonas Koch got stuck in the 2nd group. They were trying to close out a 1-minute gap, but their pursuit was interrupted 30km from the finish, when few team cars stopped on one of the climbs and slowed the chasers significantly.
On the same hill two Joker riders and Jaco Venter (Dimension Data) broke away from the leading group, creating 40-second gap. Their move was under control and got caught with 11km by the first peloton. Despite many late attempts the stage ended with a sprint and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) confirmed that he was the strongest and fastest rider of the race. He won both – the stage and general classification. At the line he bested Timo Roosen (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) and Jeroen Meijers (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) and in GC, previous leader Dries Van Gestel (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise) and Roosen.
Leszek Pluciński arrived 2:32 back in 46th place, but still managed to take 15th place in the general standings.
