Leszek Pluciński took 2nd place in the battle of climbers on the “queen” stage of CCC Tour – Grody Piastowskie moving up to 2nd overall.
Info: Stage 2, May 6th, Dzierżoniów – Srebrna Góra, 128km
Course: mountainous with 5 GPMs and a mountain top finish (Przełęcz Woliborska – 14,2km, Przełęcz Sokoła – 37,3km, Przełęcz Walimska – 46,5km, Przełęcz Jugowska – 68,8km, Przełęcz Woliborska – 87,8km, Srebrna Góra – meta)
The decisive stage in terms of final general classification began with 6-man group breaking away. It didn’t include CCC Sprandi Polkowice, but it wasn’t a big concern, since the escape was brought back in quite early.
Halfway through the stage it the peloton was compact again, but that situation didn’t last long. In the hard hilly terrain the bunch split. The strongest 13 riders emerged in the front and they approached the final 5 uphill kilometers of racing together. Among those contenders were Michał Paluta and Leszek Pluciński. Marek Rutkiewicz (Wibatech 4r Fuji) didn’t miss that action either and in the end he left everyone behind. Pluciński finished 2nd and Emanuel Piaskowy (Team Hurom) was 3rd.
Me and Michał Paluta were responding to multiple moves that were being launched from the crucial 13-man group. Eventually we kicked off the last climb together, but at the bottom of the ascent Marek Rutkiewicz attacked. I was the only rider who managed to stay on his wheel, but with 1,5km to go he accelerated again and this time I couldn’t keep up with him. At the end of the day the strongest rider won – Leszek Pluciński said after the stage.- I felt strong and I can be happy with that result. But on the other hand I am a little bit disappointed, since I’d had trained very hard to be in my top shape and to win races.
Rutkiewicz took over the GC lead, Pluciński is 2nd (26s back) and Piaskowy 3rd(30s back). Tomorrow is the last stage to Polkowice. It’s mostly flat and should suit the sprinters.
