CCC Sprandi Polkowice was unable to defend the leader jersey on Stage 1 of Podlasie Tour. After very successful prologue, when the team claimed the entire podium, this time “riders in orange” finished outside the top six.
Stage 1 was 188 kilometers long and was held around the town of Wysokie Mazowieckie. It featured 15,9-kilometer lap with one small hill, which was tackled 11 times.
There were many breakaway attempts right after the gun. Around 20 kilometers into the stage a 8-man group emerged in the front. Later four more riders, including Tomasz Kiendyś, joined them, but after next few moves only 7 men left in the breakaway. It consisted only of foreign cyclists. CCC Sprandi Polkowice runners were being followed after every attack and it was impossible for them to get in the escape.
The group got reeled in with 70 kilometers to go. It was far enough from the finish to establish a new break. This time six riders were part of the action, but there were no “riders in orange” among them. They gained over 2 minutes of advantage and the that gap was recorded when it was 25 kilometers to go. In the finale Kamil Zieliński, Andriy Vasilyuk and Matviey Nikitin pulled away and arrived at the finish together. Zieliński was the fastest from that trio and grabbed the win. Vasilyuk claimed second and became the new GC leader. Nikitin was third on the line.
After the top 3, other three escapees finished the stage, and then the bunch, with all CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders. Christian Delle Stelle was the team’s top finisher and took 9th.
