Podlasie Tour: “Orange podium” and Kurek’s victory

CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders swept the competition in the prologue of Podlasie Tour. “The “orange squad” went 1-2-3, while Adrian Kurek took the win.

It was a short race but very painful – summed up Adrian Kurek. – I’ve always felt strong in such short time trials. I also have some experience from the track, from individual pursuit, so the distance suited me. After the Sibiu Tour I was satisfied with my form and I was aiming for good result in this prologue. The course required a lot of strength. Me, Grzegorz Stępniak and Stefan Schumacher went flat out and we were powerful enough to claim the entire podium.

The course was very short, but there were few sharp turns. We had to slow down drastically couple of times and then get back to the fast pace. Also after the halfway point, after the turn around, there was a small hill, where you could either lose or gain some extra seconds. When I crossed the line I was not certain that I won. Actually I was far from good sensations, but sometimes this is how it is. You feel  great but the result is bad and sometimes you feel average but you finish in the top.

Very hard task is ahead of us. We want to deliver that lead all the way and it doesn’t matter whether it’s me to take the final victory or my teammate. There are many riders who want the victory as much as we do though and they will do everything they can to achieve that. That’s why tomorrow’s stage will be very hard and the next one will be even harder.

The opening short time trial was held on the 3,2-kilometer course in Czyżew. It included four sharp turns, with one 180-degree turnaround. In the first group of starting cyclists was Grzegorz Stępniak. He set the best time – 3:53 and for a long nobody was able to better it. Later, Stefan Schumacher posted similar, but slightly slower result.  This year’s bronze medalist from German Championships in time trial, recorded.

Adrian Kurek was the last CCC Sprandi Polkowice to tackle the course. When he crossed the line the clock stopped also at 3:53 (tens of seconds were decisive). After him 10 other riders rolled off the starting ramp, but no one was able to go faster.

Adrian Kurek, Grzegorz Stępniak and Stefan Schumacher all made their presence on the podium and all of them will be wearing the leaders’ jerseys on tomorrow’s stage. Kurek is the leader of general classification, Stępniak of the most active classification and Schumacher of the king of the mountains classification.

Fast Christian Delle Stelle, who was also one of the favorites but had mechanical, which prevented him from getting top result.
