Race of Solidarity and Olympians: Latoń third at the line, Honkisz last escapee to get caught

Eryk Latoń claimed third place on the last stage of Race of Solidarity and the Olympians. The last day of the 5-stage event, saw Adrian Honkisz in the breakaway.

The final stage was flat, but there were three intermediate sprints on the course, with bonus seconds to gain. They were very valuable for many riders, since the gaps in the general classification were very small

The escape with CCC Sprandi Polkowice was formed after 30 kiloemters of racing. Honkisz made the leading group alongside Dariusz Batek (Wibatech Fuji), Corne Van Kessel (Telenet – Fidea) and Josef Hosek (Whirlpool Author). The peloton held them on a 2-minute “leash” and didn’t let them create to much space.

After the halfway point, two Lotto Soudal riders – Emiel Planckaert and Mathias Krigbaum – decided to bridge across. They managed to join the break. Planckaert won the last intermediate sprint of the race and took over youth classification lead from Jakub Kaczmarek.

Despite good collaboration in the front, the bunch caught the escapees in the last 15 kilometers. Adrian Honkisz was the last rider, who came  back to the group. The peloton was all together when it entered Łodź and the finish was located on the well known Piotrkowska street.

Eryk Latoń was well positioned in the sprint, but he had to settle for third. He was outsprinted by the stage winner, Johim Ariesen, for whom it was fourth victory in the race. He also won the final general classification. Alois Kankokovsky (Whirlpool-Author) was the second fastest and Eryk Latoń took third. The finish was interrupted by a crash, which happened few hundred meters before the line.

The finale was quite nervous. The road was narrow, with cobbles, and tracks, so you had to be very careful. Grzegorz Stępniak was with me and helped me move up to the front of the group. He led me out and I was the first one to start the sprint, with 300 meters to go. Very strong Kankokovsky and Ariesen were both on my wheel and they overtook me before the line. The finishing straight was going slightly uphill so it was a hard sprint – Eryk Latoń said afterwards.

Jakub Kaczmarek was the highest ranked rider of CCC Sprandi Polkowice. He completed the race in 8th, 31 seconds back and 2nd in the youth classification.
