Race of Solidarity and the Olympians: Marczynski finished in Top20 on the hardest stage

Tomasz Marczynski finished the hardest stage of this year’s Race of Solidarity and the Olympians in 18th place. He is only 20 seconds behind in the general classification and is still in the contention for the podium spot.

The breakaway of the day was created after one hour of racing and planty of attacks from the field. The lucky trio included Kornel Sojka (Mexller), Sergey Belytkh (Rus T21) and Matej Jurco (Dukla Trencin). Taking into consideration long distance and hard final part of the stage (with climb to Kamieniec Castle, talked three times), peleton decided to let them create 6 minute advantage.

Jonas Rapp (Team Kuota) and Blazej Janiaczyk (BDC MarcPol) tried to bridge the gap, but eventually, with 10k to go, everyone ended up in the main group, mostly due to hard work of CCC Polsat Polkowice at the front of the bunch. The “orange” squad fragmented the peleton and dropped leader of the race – Johim Ariesen (Metec).

In the last 10k Kamil Zielinski (Mexller) and Mirko Tedeschi (Team Idea) broke clear. They were only 15 seconds ahead but it was enough to fight for the victory. Zielinski outsprinted his Italian rival and not only claimed the stage win, but also became the new leader of the race. Tomasz Marczynski arrived in the main group, 10 seconds behind the winner. He is still in the contention for the GC, since he is only 20 seconds back in general classification.

On Saturday there will be the last and decisive stage. Route from Strzyzow to Jarosław is also demanding and the race is still open.
