Rebellin 3rd in GP Industria & Commercio di Prato

Davide Rebellin arrived at the line of GP Industria & Commercio di Prato in a 5-man group and managed to finish 3rd.

The course was very demanding today. I attacked early to break the group apart and make the race difficult for everyone. I took off with 4 other riders and we were going flat out all the way to the finish. I knew it will be very hard to beat Bennati in a sprint, since he is one of the fastest riders in the peloton, but I tried anyway. I believed until the very finish that I can outsprint him but at the end it was him who was the fastest and I was able to claim good, third place – Davide Rebellin said afterwards.

Before the winning move, another CCC Sprandi Polkowice was working hard in the breakaway. Łukasz Owsian spent nearly 100 kilometers in the front, alongside Jaco Venter (MTN-Qhubeka), Antonio Nibali (Nippo-Fantini), Lorenzo Rota and Giovanni Carboni (both Unieuro-Wilier).Their maximum lead reached 3:45, but their chances of surviving until the very end were very slim. Bunch began the chase early and the escape was brought back in around 75 kilometers from the finish.

After multiple attacks in the hard terrain another 5-man escape was formed. Again CCC Sprandi Polkowice was represented in the lead by its rider – Davide Rebellin. After winning Coppa Agostoni few days earlier, Italian was chasing another podium spot with Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), Marco Marcato (Wanty – Groupe Gobert), Daniele Bennati (Włochy) and Luca Wackermann (Southeast).

9 riders were trying to jump across to the lead and the gap between them and the 5 escapees was around 40 seconds. They had to give up with 5 kilometers to go, when peloton reeled them in.

Rebellin and other attackers were able to hold off the bunch and the race was decided in a 5-man sprint. Bennati, who has won bunch sprints on many occasions in his career was the big favorite and he didn’t disappoint. He grabbed the victory by besting Marcato and Davide Rebellin, who has proved one more time his still one of the best Italian classic riders in the peloton.
