Ronde de Oise: Grzegorza Stępniak’s 19th place in stage 1

The rider of Itera-Katusha, Viacheslav Kuznetsov, became the winner of stage 1 of the Ronde de l’Oise race (cat. 2.2 UCI). Grzegorz Stępniak (CCC Polsat Polkowice) finished in the 19th place.

During the first stage the riders rode a distance of 138 km that led from Breuil-le-Sec to Montataire. The route led mostly along narrow and winding roads, and a additional impairment was the heavy rain which had a significant effect on the competition along the route.

From the beginning of the stage the pace of the peloton was very high and every now and then there were various break-aways from it, but no rider managed to ride away for longer than 30 seconds. The riders of CCC Polsat Polkowice started the race very actively, trying to get into each action and take part in break-aways. At 60 kilometres of the route the peloton got torne into several groups and in the first of them all riders of CCC Polsat Polkowice were riding. When about 50 kilometres were left before the finishing line fewer and fewer riders were in the first group. A group of 13 riders decided on a strong attack, they managed to ride away, reaching a dozen seconds’ lead. A moment later 3 more cyclists joined. Also Bartłomiej Matysiak tried to jump into the break away, but the head-wind was too strong and did not let him reach the break-away group. About 10 km before the finishing line 3 riders attacked out of the first group. Kuznetsov (Itera Katiusza), Chtioui (Europcar) and Camano Ortuzar (Endura Racing). Co-operating harmoniously they reached a 10-second lead over the remaining group of riders and with such a lead they reached the finishing line, settling the finish among themselves.

The fastest at the finishing line was Kuznetsov, who defeated Chtioui (Europcar) and Camano Ortuzar (Endura Racing).

The best of CCC Polsat Polkowice riders was Grzegorz Stępniak, who finished in the 19th position (4th in the peloton).

A very unlucky beginning of the race – said the sporting director Robert Krajewski. In today’s stage we had as many as 8 defects and one of them was so serious that Tomek Kiendyś had to withdraw from the race. Not too good a week (first the bad luck of Marek Rutkiewicz during the race in Slovakia, now the terrible beginning in France). I hope that we have run out of the unlucky events and from now on everything will be all right.

Kuznetsov, thanks to the victory in stage 1, became the leader of the race and he put on the yellow jersey. The highest ranked ‘orange’ rider is Grzegorz Stępniak, who is now holding the 21st place in the general classification, 35 seconds behind the leader.
