Tomasz Kiendyś finished first of two Dutch events in the region of Drenthe, in Top 50 and was the only rider from the “orange team” who completed the race. Belgian Edward Theuns (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise) took the win.
Albert Achterhes Pet Ronde van Drenthe was another race from the CCC Sprandi Polkowice spring campaign held in the Benelux country. Just like other events from that region the course ran through hilly terrain, on the narrow and sometimes cobblestone roads. That kind of route always causes lots of chaos and nervousness.
At the beginning of the race a 5-man group (with no CCC Sprandi Pokowice riders involved) broke clear, creating a 4-minute lead. The escapees were reeled in with tens of kilometers to go though.
They were substituted at the front by 30 riders, with biggest favorites among them. Later on, five runners launched an attack – Bert-Jan Lindeman (Team LottoNL-Jumbo), Scott Thwaites (Bora-Argon 18), Jasper Asselman (Team Roompot Oranje Peloton), Edward Theuns (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise) and Joey Van Rhee (Cyclingteam Jo Piels). The chasing group was pedaling over one minute behind them and was not able to reduce the distance.
The leaders worked well together and survived to the very end. Theuns won the sprint, ahead of Lindemana and Van Rhee. Tomasz Kiendyś arrived in the bunch in 48th place.
