Łukasz Owsian was part of the main breakaway on very fast and demanding stage 4 of Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol and was also the team’s top finisher at the line.
Info: Stage 4, February 17th, Sevilla – Alcalá de los Gazules, 191,2km
Course: flat/hilly, uphill finale (1,5km, max. 18%)
It was an extremely fast start to stage 4, with a tailwind and average speed of nearly 50km/h in the first hour of racing. In such conditions it was impossible to go clear and the breakaway of the day was established after covering 55 kilometers. Łukasz Owsian managed to slip into the 13-man leading group, which also included James Shaw (Lotto Soudal), Guillaume Martin (Wanty – Gobert Group) i Jesus Ezquerra (Burgos-HD), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Sep Vanmarcke (EF Education First-Drapac), Julien Duval (AG2R La Mondiale), Marco Minnaard (Wanty Gobert Group), Thomas Boudat (Direct Energy), Delio Fernández (Delko Marseille), Coen Vermeltfoort (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Huub Duijn (Verandas Willems-Crelan), Kyle Murphy (Rally).
On cat. 1 climb, located halfway through the stage, the breakaway split. Two teammates, Martin and Minnaard pulled away and most of the other escapees, including Owsian, got reeled in by a splintered to just 30 men bunch.
After another hill and some reshuffling in the front, the new leading duo emerged – Vanmarcke and Andrey Amador (Movistar). At one point they had nearly 2 minutes on the main group, but eventually got caught at the bottom of the decisive hill, with just 1,2km to go.
On the steepest section Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) and Mikel Landa (Movistar) launched the key attack and in the end the former outclimbed his rival taking both, the stage win and overall lead.
Despite riding in a breakaway, Owsian managed to stay with the peloton and was CCC Sprandi Polkowice top finisher, coming in in 35th place (1:19 back).
