Łukasz Owsian was part of the breakaway of the day on stage 4 of Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol.
Info: February 18th, stage 4, La Campana (Sevilla) – Sevilla, 179,3km
Weather: warm, cloudy
Course: hilly, flat final stretch
The profile of the stage suited escapees, due to three categorized climbs in the first part of the race and the flat finale. Thus, it was important to get into the breakaway. It took many attempts but eventually Łukasz Owsian managed to pull away, alongside Martijn Budding (Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij), Jérôme Cousin (Cofidis), Martijn Keizer (Team LottoNL-Jumbo), Diego Rubio (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA) and Jens Wallays (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise).
The peloton didn’t make life easy for the escapees, as the gap was never over three minutes. That didn’t discourage the attackers, as they fought hard to maintain the advantage.
With 10km to go the differential was less than one minute, so the race was still open. Ultimately the breakaway was reeled in 4 kilometers from the line and it was all decided in a bunch sprint.
Maciej Paterski tried to position himself for the finale, but this time he had to settle for 22nd place. Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) sprinted for victory, edging out Daniel Hoelgaard (FDJ) and Hugo Hofsetter (Cofidis).
Alejandro Valverde kept his overall lead.
