The rider of the Glud & Marstrand team, Andre Steensen, became the winner of stage 2 of Circuit des Ardennes (cat. UCI 2.2). At the finishing line in Renwez he defeated his companion in break-away, the rider of CCC Polsat Polkowice, Marek Rutkiewicz.
Another, the second day of the race in the Ardennes, was much strenuous and difficult, 170 kilometres long stretch of the route leading around the place of Renwez, where the starting and finishing line of stage 2 was located. Most of the route of stage 2 was in a hilly, much rolling area, where the organizers placed as many as five climbs.
Marek Rutkiewicz was riding very actively during the second stage, thanks to him right after the start out of the peloton a group of a dozen or so riders broke away from the peloton, quickly gaining lead over the peloton. The leader of the race, Russell Downing (Endura Racing), was also involved in the break-away, thus the group of 17 riders, cooperating harmoniously, consistently maintained their lead, which was a little more than 1 minute. Unfortunately, the composition of the break-away group did not suit the peloton, who organized an efficient chase, and led to eliminating the break-away. But that was not the end of actions in the peloton. There were a lot more attempts to break-away, but only in the uphill stretch for the fourth of the climbs, at 150 kilometres of the route, Marek Rutkiewicz attacked again, and his attack turned out to be successful. Marek won the climb and he managed to jump away from the peloton by several seconds. He was joined by Andre Steensen (Glud & Mastrand) and they continued the breakaway together, having a lead over the peloton of a dozen or so seconds.
10 kilometres before the finishing line there was the last one out of the five climbs, also won by Marek Rutkiewicz, who was still riding with Steensen in the breakaway. In the chase after the break-aways quite a big group of riders formed, led by the leader of the race, Russell Downing. Despite the reckless chase, 4 kilometres before the finishing line the twosome’s advantage was over half a minute, and everything showed that the break away would not reach the finishing line.
In the final metres Andre Steensen had the most strength left and it was him who became the winner of stage 2. After 28 seconds Johan Mombaerts (Auber 93) arrived at the finishing line, and the chase group was brought by Russel Downing after 50 seconds.
After the 2nd stage the leader is Andre Steensen, overtaking Marek Rutkiewicz by 4 seconds, and Johan Mombaerts by 33 seconds. In the 20th place there is Bartłomiej Matysiak.
Marek Rutkiewicz became the leader of the mountains classification and the CCC Polsat Polkowice team is holding the 4th place in the teams classification.
