Szymon Sajnok opened the last race of 2018 season for the “orange squad”, Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey (2.UWT), with 14th place in stage 1.
Info: October 9th, Konya – Konya, 148,4 km
The opening stage was marked with 5-man breakaway, which went clear early on. Peloton didn’t let them gain too much ground though, keeping the gap under 3 minutes. CCC Sprandi Polkowice were one of the teams riding at the head of the pack, setting the pace of pursuit.
Eventually the escape got caught with 13km remaining to set foundations for sprinters’ battle. With 4km to go one of the top favorites, Fernando Gaviria crashed and was ruled out of the bunch gallop.
Despite his absence, Quick Step Floors still managed to claim the win, as Maximiliano Richeze took advantage of a sharp right turn, which was awaiting 300m before the line. This is where he made his move and held on until the finish.
CCC Sprandi Polkowice moved to the front of the pack inside the closing 5 kilometers and tried to position their sprinter, Szymon Sajnok for the finale. In the end he finished in 14th place.
