Szymon Sajnok sprinted against the world class sprinters in Rund um Koln, to take 3rd place at the line.
Info: June 10th , Koln – Koln, 207,7km
The race saw a 7-man breakaway getting clear early and gaining 3:30 on the bunch, with all CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders. The peloton kept things under control and they cut the deficit to 1:30 early, with less than 100km to go.
The escape was brought back in with 60km remaining, when the pace picked up in the undulating terrain. Nobody was able to create a gap later on and it came down to a mass sprint.
After great teamwork, Szymon Sajnok was able to kick off the finish well positioned and returned the favor by taking 3rd place. His result is even more impressive if you take into consideration that he’s only 20 years old, and bested some big names of sprint, such as Marcel Kittel.
We took over the initiative on the last lap, with 6km to go. The entire squad moved to the helm of the bunch, to secure a good position for me in the finale. Thanks to my teammates I didn’t have to battle through the group. With 1km to go I sat on Marcel Kittel’s wheel and in the end I just went full gas – Szymon Sajnok explained. – Obviously it’s always nice to race against World Tour riders, especially when you beat some of them, but at the end of the day I treat everyone the same way. On the road they are all my rivals.
Such result is definitely a huge motivational boost for the future though and I see that I’m heading the right direction.
Sam Bennet took home victory, ahead of Mihkel Raim.
