Michal Schlegel took 16th place in stage 3 of Tour of Austria, which featured mountain top finish to Kitzbuheler Horn.
Info: July 9th, Kufstein – Kitzbuheler Horn, 133,6km
Course: mountain top finish (7,3km, avg. 12%, max. 23%)
Before the riders took on the monument climb of Kitzbuheler Horn, the peloton had to close the gap to the 7-man breakaway, which was established early on. CCC Sprandi Polkowice were not part of that move, as they were gearing up for the decisive ascent in the bunch.
The 4-minute advantage was neutralized with 18km to go, on the drive-in to the bottom of the ascent. Favorites’ teams were setting high pace to position their leaders and nobody was able to get clear late in the stage.
When the road kicked, the bunch was quickly shattered to around 25 men. Michal Schlegel was up there, with the strongest, but he couldn’t stay with them, when key attacks were being launched.
Ben Hermans (Israel Academy) was the author of the most powerful one, as he took the solo win, ahead of Bahrain Merida’s Hermann Pernsteiner and Dario Cataldo (Astana).
Michal Schlegel reached the top in 16th place, 1:37 back.
