After Friday’s attempt by Marcin Białobłocki, on stage 2 of Giro d’Italia Łukasz Owsian made sure that CCC Sprandi Polkowice is represented in the breakaway of the day.
Info: Stage 2, May 6th, Olbia – Tortoli (221km)
Course: undulating (two categorized climbs – cat. 2 and cat. 3)
CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider went away soon after the start, alongside 4 other attackers. Him, Daniel Teklehaimanot (Dimension Data), Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Ilia Koshevoy (Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia) and Simone Andreetta (Bardiani – CSF) established 6-minute lead, before the peloton picked up the pace and started reducing the gap.
Owsian stayed up front until 58km to go, on cat. 2 climb to Genna Silana, when he lost contact with his fellow escapees. Riders in the remnants of the break were still fighting for points at GPM and Teklehaimanot was the one who crested the top in first place, taking over the KOM jersey.
Final 45km of racing was all downhill or flat so it was very fast and didn’t change the outcome of the race. It came down to a bunch gallop, which was taken by new GC leader, Andre Greipel (Lott-Soudal). He outsprinted Roberto Ferrari (UAE Team Emirates) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek – Segafredo). Simone Ponzi was CCC Sprandi Polkowice top finisher, claiming 22nd place.
