Simone Ponzi sprinted to 3rd place on stage 1 of Sibiu Tour, which was won after a solo move, made by an escapee, Edvin Avila.
Info: Stage 1, 6th of July, Sibiu – Sibiu, 211,2km
Course: undulating (7 categorized climbs)
How it unfolded
The opening of the stage saw multiple attacks and it took over 35 kilometers to form the day’s main breakaway. It included Moritz Fussnegger (0711 Cycling) and Edvin Avila (Team lluminate). They were given almost 8 minutes of advantage until the peloton, often led by CCC Sprandi Polkowice, got to work and started the pursuit.
The cooperation in the main group didn’t work out very well and Avila took full advantage of it. First he dropped Fussnegger, who got caught later on, and then continued his solo journey towards the line. He held off the chasers, taking an impressive win and overall lead.
There was only 2nd place up for grabs for the sprinters and Eduardo Grosu (Romania) won that battle. Simone Ponzi finished right behind him, claiming 3rd.
It was pity that it was only a sprint for 2nd place, but I’m still happy to get onto the podium – Ponzi said afterwards. – Maciej Paterski was leading me out in the finale and I started my finish with 100m to go. When I kicked I felt that the power is there. I hope I will be able to maintain that form in the next days.
