Amaro Antunes claimed 4th place in general classification of Sibiu Cycling Tour, which ended with a rainy stage around Sibiu.
Info: July 8th, Sibiu – Sibiu, 152,8km
After winning the morning TTT, in the afternoon CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders approached final stage of Sibiu Cycling Tour. It saw 7-man breakaway pulling away and gaining 4:30. Members of the orange squad didn’t make it into that group though and were chasing back in the bunch.
The pursuit in the final 40 kilometers was hindered by pouring rain and flooded in some parts roads. The escapees wanted to take advantage of those conditions and worked well together, but peloton picked up the chase drastically late in the stage. With 12km to go the gap was at 2 minutes but eager pursuiters brought it down to just 10 seconds while entering final 1km.
All escapees, but one, Jason van Dalen (Delta Cycling), were caught by the bunch in the punchy and cobbled finale. The Dutchman took the win and held off Eduard Grossu (Romania), who power sprinted from the main pack for 2nd. Davide Ballerini (Androni) finished third.
Amaro Antunes arrived safely across the line, in 26th, securing 4th place overall, 1:14 behind Ivan Sosa (Androni) who claimed the GC victory.
