Davide Rebellin completed the Sibiu Tour in second place overall and Christian Delle Stelle wrapped up the five-day event with third, on the final day of racing.
The last stage was held around Sibiu and it featured category C Poplaca hill, which was tackled six times. A three man group broke clear early on and began the journey in the front. Iuri Filosi (Nippo – Vini Fantini), Georg Loef (Team Stuttgart) and Marco Tecchio (Unieuro Wilier Trevigiani) established a four-minute lead, but it was quickly reduced by the bunch.
They were reeled in around halfway point and the stage started all over. Tecchio and Loef didn’t give up easily and attacked again. This time they were joined by Matvei Mamykin (Itera – Katusha). They built up a two-minute advantage. Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec was setting the pace in the bunch and controlled the chase.
The leading group was brought back in with 13 kilometers to go. Nobody was able to create some gap on the final categorized climb and the stage ended with a bunch sprint. Christian Delle Stelle finished in third, behind the winner Oscar Gatto (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) and Eduard Michael Grosu (Nippo – Vini Fantini). The result of CCC Sprandi Polkowice sprinter is more impressive if you take into consideration the circumstances.
I crashed on the final climb, 10 kilometers from the finish. I got up as quickly as I could and put a lot of effort into returning to the peloton. My team did a great job in helping me to get back in the race for the victory. The sprint was very chaotic, but I have to admit that two riders who were ahead of me were the strongest sprinters today. I can be happy with 3rd place, because I was away from racing for nearly two months due to back problems. Now things are getting back on the right track and I am optimistic and confident about the next races – Christian Delle Stelle said afterwards.
The peloton stretched out in the end and time gaps were recorded at the line. Davide Rebellin finished in the first group and secured second place overall. For the Italian it was third consecutive podium spot in Sibiu Tour. Rebellin was defeated in the general classification only by Mauro Finetto (Southeast).
I am happy with the second place in GC, although I came to Sibiu with the mindset to win. On today’s stage there were no places where I could attack and try to gain some seconds on the leader – Davide Rebellin explained. – I want to thank my teammates who were brilliant the entire race and did an excellent job. Now I will take few days of rest and then prepare for the next race, which will probably be Tour de Pologne.
Aside from Rebellin, also Nikolay Mihaylov completed the race in the Top 10, as he was 7th overall.
