How it unfolded
Maciej Paterski tried his chances in one of the first attempts to form the escape of the day, but hist move was neutralized after 5km. The second attack was more successful and included Nicolas Tivani (Unieuro Trevigiani – Hemus 1896), Ivar Slik (Monkey Town Continental Team), Leonardo Canepa (GM Europa Ovini), Emil Vinjebo (Team Giant – Castelli), Martin Haring (Dukla Banska Bystrica), Nikodemus Holler (Bike Aid). They recorded maximum advantage of the day at 4’35.
As expected, the 23 kilometers of the famous Transfagaraska road, that led to Balea Lac, were decisive. CCC Sprandi Polkowice was among the teams that set strong chasing tempo, which split the peloton into smaller groups.
The last escapee standing, Holler, was caught by 15-man group, with 15km to go.
Last 6 kilometers saw multiple attacks from the GC contenders, but nobody could match the pace of Egan Bernal (Androni Giocatolli). He soloed to the top and took a convincing win, with an advantage of 1’23” over Colin Stüssi (Roth-Kros).
Simone Ponzi showed his versatility, finishing 11th ( 1’44” to the winner). It’s very impressive result, considering yesterday’s 3rd place claimed in a bunch sprint. Italian now sits in 6th place overall. Last year’s overall winner, Nikolay Mihaylov was 17th.
The leader jersey on tomorrow’s 211km mountain Sibiu- Păltiniș stage will be worn by Bernal.
