Szymon Sajnok recorded hat-trick as he won third stage in a row in Mazovia Tour.
Info: July 27th, stage 2, Grodzisk Mazowiecki – Grodzisk Mazowiecki, 166km
Course: nine flat laps, 18,5km each
Riders in orange were in the control most of the day, just like on stage 1. This time however, the breakaway was established late in the race, near halfway point of 166km course.
Despite many attempts, none of the escapes stuck. Big peloton arrived to the first intermediate sprint and this is where Szymon Sajnok added another seconds to his lead, taking 2nd place. At the next sprint Kamil Gradek was 3rd, as he was part of around 10-man group that went away for a while.
On fifth lap the day’s main breakaway got clear and it included 7 riders. Rivals had their eye on every CCC Sprandi Polkowice move, so it was hard for the squad to get into that group. They took on the responsibility of chasing, kept the gap at around 1 minute and brought the escapees back in on the final circuit.
Again it came down to a mass finish and again it was Sajnok who could raise his arms in glory at the line. World champion in omnium bested another world champion in omnium, Alois Kankovsky and extended his overall lead. Grzegorz Stępniak sprinted to third.
Our guys worked all the day for that success. In the finale other teams were pressing us and some of my teammates drifted towards the middle of the pack. Fortunately Kamil Gradek and Alan Banaszek kept their positions and helped me find the right spot for the sprint. I launched it from Grzegorz Stępniak’s wheel. I managed to go around him but it was all very close. Our opponents set the bar very high and I’m happy to have “jumped over it” – Szymon Sajnok said afterwards.
That third consecutive victory gives me a lot of satisfaction. Sensations are good after the high altitude training camp in Livigno, before the European Championships. My form is not ideal yet, but I’m definitely going the right direction.
