The winner of stage 5 of Tour de Pologne is for the second time Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale). At the finishing line in Zakopane he beat Paul Matthews (Rabobank) and Heinrich Haussler (Garmin-Cervelo). Another day of very good riding on the part of the cyclists of the CCC Polsat Polkowice team.
The fifth stage, 201.5 kilometres long led in a mountainous area around Zakopane. The cyclists rode 5 round altogether, each 40.3 kilometres long. In each of them there were two climbs: of category 1 at Głodówka and of category 2 on the way to Olcza.
And again, as during yesterday’s stage, the active cyclists were those from the team of CCC Polsat Polkowice and of the representation of Poland, as well as the Poles riding in foreign teams. The first one to try to ride away was, among others, Jarosław Marycz (Saxo Bank) and Mateusz Taciak (CCC Polsat Polkowice). However, the proper, five-person breakaway formed itself a bit later, and there were in it : Miguel Minguez (Euskaltel), Wasilij Kirijenka (Movistar), Rusłan Pidgorny (Vacansoleil), Mateusz Taciak and Albert Timmer (Skil-Shimano). The advantage of the escaping five cyclists grew quickly and it reached even 6 minutes.
Mateusz Taciak fought fiercely at the climbs, winning the climbs at Głodówka and Olcza. The next climbs were won by the Ukrainian cyclists Rusłan Pidorny, who rode away alone from a group of escapees, and on the way he won the subsequent climbs. He collected quite a lot of points and thus he took the best climber’s jersey from Bartek Matysiak (CCC Polsat Polkowice).
In the penultimate lap, the working hard peloton caught up with the escaping foursome, leaving at the head Pogdorny, whose advantage decreased quickly. During the last stage, 25 kilometres from the finishing line the cyclists were riding together and from time to time there were attempts to attack in the peloton. In the downhill stretch from Poronin, before a sprint stage Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC Polsat Polkowice) attacked. He gained a little advantage quite soon, which secured him a victory at the sprint stage and winning the valuable bonus seconds.
The final stretch belonged to the cyclists of Liquigas, whose whole team worked for the leader. Right before the finishing line, after a long finish Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) attacked and it seemed that he will be the one to win the stage. However, Peter Sagan pressed the pedals very hard and again he crossed the finishing line as the first one.
The second one was Matthews, the third one Haussler. The best of CCC Polsat Polkowice cyclists was Tomasz Marczyński who crossed the finishing line in the 17th place.
In the general classification Sagan is still leading, before Marco Marcato and Romain Feillu.
Tomasz Marczyński (CCC Polsat Polkowice) is holding the seventh place.
