The victory of Dean Downing from Rapha Condor Sharp ended the 5th stage of Tour de Taiwan. Bartłomiej Matysiak (Merida CCC Team) was the 4th.
The 5th stage of the race is one of the longest and for sure the most difficult stage of the this year’s whole Tour. The cyclists had 157,3 km to cover, which lead them around Miaola, and on the way there were two first and third category climbs as well as 3 spring stages. The most difficult part of the stage was the last 60 kilometres, where the cyclists had to do the climbs. Then the peleton broke into groups. The relatively long ride down from the second climb made racers join into groups and a group of 33 racers gained a small advantage over the peleton. In this group there were two cyclists of Merida CCC Team: Jarosław Rebiewski and Bartłomiej Matysiak.
Bartłomiej Matysiak joined the struggle for the stage win, but unfortunately he was defeated by Dean Downing, who said: ‘It was ideal for me, I jumped out 250 metres before the finish line, from behind the CCC racer’s back and I won’. Matysiak was also behind two Japanese sprint cyclists: Shinri Suzuki and Takashi Miyazawa, and he eventually was the 4th.
In the general classification of the race David McCann is still the winner, and Tomasz Smoleń, after losing 5 minutes in today’s stage, fell to the 30th place. The highest place belongs to Jarosław Rebiewski on the 24th place, adrift 3:27 of the leader.
