Jonas Koch sprinted to 16th place and in total four CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders arrived in the shattered, 40-man group, in stage 4 of Tour of Austria.
Info: July 10th, Kitzbuheler – Pragraten, 143km
Course: hilly, punchy uphill finish
The race was on right from the get-go and the riders maintain that high speed throughout the rest of the stage. The road towards first cat. 3 kicked early and it saw countless attacks. Peloton were strung out and none of the attempts to break clear was successful.
One of the victims of that rapid speed on the climbs was the main sprinter of CCC Sprandi Polkowice, Marko Kump, as he abandoned on cat. 1 ascent.
The highest gap of the day, was recorded by Cummings, Van Zyl, Mohoric and Zimmermann, who pulled away in the descent from Felbertauern. At some point they had 1:40 in hand, but the bunch was very eager to chase them down. The attackers were brought back in with 18km remaining.
The final uphill drive to the finish was long enough to shatter the field to just 40 men, but not steep enough to divide top favorites. 40 riders arrived across the line together and among them were four guys of CCC Sprandi Polkowice – 16th overall Michal Schlegel, as well as Jonas Koch, Paweł Cieślik and Leszek Pluciński. Koch was the team’s top finisher as he took 16th place.
Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) powered to victory in that punchy sprint, besting Wout van Aert (Veranda’s Willems) and Michael Brisciani (Bardiani CSF).
