Tour de Hongrie: Małecki claims 2nd overall, Stosz with KOM jersey

Last stage of Tour de Hongrie was a display of strength by „riders in orange” as 22-year old Kamil Małecki claimed 3rd place at the line and 2nd overall, Patryk Stosz defended his KOM jersey and the entire squad won teams classification victory.

Info: August 19th, stage 5, Kazincbarcika – Kazincbarcika, 128km

Course: undulating (two KOM’s cat. 3, three intermediate sprints)

The final day of race was full of attacks, but it didn’t see a typical breakaway get clear and gain a bigger advantage. It was all together at the bottom of the first KOM of the stage (54km in), where first – out of two – battle for King of the Mountains jersey took place.

Patryk Stosz, who was leading in that competition since stage 1, bested his biggest rival, Attila Valter, on the first summit and repeated his successful sprint uphill at second KOM as well. Therefore CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider secured final victory and will take home the red jersey.

The “orange squad” was also very busy at intermediate sprints where Kamil Małecki was fighting for bonus seconds to move up into top 3 overall. He was 2nd at first sprint, won another one and he still had his sights on the finish.

In the final 40km of racing riders of Polkowice-based squad basically didn’t take a break from leading the field. They were riding at the helm of the pack for most of the time controlling every move there was. Thanks to their effort it came down to a bunch gallop, which turned out to be a quite tricky one. There was a sharp turn to the left, which caused a crash. Kamil Małecki managed to come out of it unharmed and sprinted to 3rd place, claiming another 4 seconds of bonification. That helped him move to 2nd place in the final general classification. Nikodemus Holler won the stage and Manuel Belletti the overall.

Our goal for today was to fight for seconds to move up in GC. My teammates did a great job of leading me out at intermediate sprints, where I collected 5 seconds. That lifted me to 3rd overall, but we still kept our eyes on the finish line – Kamil Małecki explained. – There was a little bit of luck involved in the finale, since I lost few positions and that late crash opened up the possibility for me to go for the stage win.

This is my biggest success so far. I’m very happy about it, since I also rode for my teammates and without them I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what I was able to accomplish. The race was decided by seconds, I felt strong every day and I wanted to fight until the very end. We managed to get that 2nd place thanks to enormous team effort and I want to thank all my teammates for their support.

After the stage CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders stepped onto the podium to collect KOM jersey (Patryk Stosz), medals for 3rd place on the stage and 2nd overall (Kamil Małecki) and to accept the award for victory in teams classification.
