Piotr Brożyna took 8th place in the hardest stage of Le Tour de Langkawi and moved up into top 10 in the general classification.
Info: March 22nd, Bentong – Cameron Highlands, 169,4km
Course: mountain top finish
The “queen stage”, with a mountain top finish to Cameron Highlands, saw 6-man breakaway, which was established after nearly 35km of racing. The peloton, with all CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders, allowed them to build a 3-minute gap. It began to decrease just before the bottom of the final uphill stretch, with 40km to go.
When the road kicked up, the breakaway shattered. Only Juan Felipe Osorio (Manzana Postobon) and Luca Wackermann (Bardiani – CSF) left in the lead. That duo didn’t stay together for too long though, since Italian got dropped and was replaced by Artem Ovechkin (Terengganu Cycling Team), who bridged from the bunch. Later Russian left his rivals behind and soloed to the summit.
Meanwhile with 10km to go, the action heated up in the bunch. Piotr Brożyna attacked, alongside 7 other riders. They didn’t manage to catch Ovechkin though, who claimed a solo win. Benjamin Dyball (St. George Continental Cycling Team) who was 2nd, lost 28 seconds, while Amanuel Gebreigzabhier (Dimension Data) who got third was 55s back.
Piotr Brożyna reached the top in 8th place, 1:10 behind the winner and climbed to 9th place in the overall standings (+1:20). Three stages to go.
