In a reduced bunch finish, Marko Kump took 5th place in stage 2 of Le Tour de Langkawi.
Info: March 19th, Gerik – Kota Bharu, 208km
Course: flat finale, mountainous first part
6-man breakaway was formed with around 25km into the stage, when two riders joined the leading quartet. They broke clear on first categorized climb of the day, which also saw few riders get dropped from the bunch. Second ascent shattered the field even more and after descent it consisted of 70 riders. Alan Banaszek and Szymon Sajnok, as well as GC leader, Andrea Guardini (Bardiani-CSF) were among those who couldn’t keep up with the pace.
The peloton didn’t want to allow Guardini to get back to the game and they set very high pace. They closed the gap to escapees early, with 73km to go.
From that point there were multiple attempts to break the field, but despite all of them it stayed altogether until the finish. It came down to a sprint which was won by Riccardo Minali (Astana). He defeated Manuel Belletti (Androni – Sidermec – Bottecchia) and Paolo Simion (Bardiani – CSF). Marko Kump was also in the mix, sprinting to very good, 5th place.
