Felix Grossschartner finished stage 4, which featured mountain top finish to Kitzbüheler Horn, in 10th place, moving up to 10th in GC of Tour of Austria.
Info: Stage 4, 6th of July, Salzburg – Kitzbüheler Horn, 82,7km
Course: mountain top finish (7,6km, max. 23%, avg. 12,3%)
How it unfolded
With short distance of 82 kilometers and an extremely steep climb towards the finish, one could expect an exciting race, right from the start. It was also supposed to answer few GC-related questions.
Despite fast pace in the bunch 6 riders managed to pull away early: Elia Viviani (Italy), Pim Ligthart (Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij), Patrick Bosman (Team Hrinkow Advarics Cycleang), Jodok Salzmann (WSA-Greenlife), Daniel Diaz (Delko Marseille Provence KTM) and Loic Chetout (Cofidis). They maintained around 1-minute gap and on the run-in to the final climb they had 40-second lead.
When the road kicked the pace in the pack increased as well and the escapees got reeled in. Top climbers launched their attacks at the bottom of the ascent and Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) was the one who put the hammer down. 2016 Tour de Suisse winner took the win, although Stefan Denifl (Aqua Blue Sport) was right there behind him, reaching the top 16 seconds behind. Giulio Ciccione (Włochy) was third at the summit.
Felix Grossschartner recorded another strong performance, claiming 10th place, 1:33 back. That helped him move to 5th place overall, 1:21 behind new leader, Denifl.
