Tour of Austria: Paterski 13th in a bunch sprint

For the third consecutive time in the Tour of Austria, Maciej Paterski finished in Top 20. He took 13th place on Stage 3. It ended with a bunch sprint and Rick Zabel (BMC Racing) grabbed the victory.

The breakaway of the day was formed with 15 kilometers into the stage. Michael Gogl (Tirol Cycling Team), Johnny Hoogerland (Team Roompot Oranje Peloton) and Dominik Hrinkow (Team Hrinkow Advarics Cycleang) pulled away and were steadily increasing their advantage. After 74 kilometers of racing it was at 5:30.

When the gap dropped to 1:30, with 50 kilometers left, Gatis Smukulis (Katusha) took off from the bunch. He bridged across and the four-man escape’s lead grew again to 4 minutes. The pace in the break was solid and Hrinkow got dropped on one of the climbs. Riders in the bunch were not going easy either and reduced the gap to one minute, with 17 kilometers to go.

The peloton brought all the escapees back in and despite few late attacks it came down to a battle of sprinters. Rick Zabel (BMC Racing) was the strongest in the finale. He bested new GC leader, Angel Vicioso (Team Katusha) and Jan Tratnik (Amplatz – BMC). Maciej Paterski claimed 13th place and is the highest ranked CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider overall. He sits in 34th, 21 seconds back.
