Patryk Stosz came in 10th and Jan Hirt arrived in the bunch in stage 6 of Tour of Austria. Czech kept the yellow jersey and together with the teammates will be protecting it in tomorrow’s final stage.
With over 200 kilometers to cover and two categorized climb (cat. 2 and 3) near the end of the stage, it was definitely not an easy terrain to defend the yellow jersey on. First hour of racing was a good indication of how hard the race will be. The average speed of 50km/h prevented any rider from going clear and many tried.
The breakaway was formed after nearly 80km and included Nich Van Der Lijke (Roompot), Jevgenij Slunov (Gazprom) and Alessandro Vanotti (Astana). Since all of them were far back in the general standings, the race calmed down and “riders in orange” could easily pedal at the head of the pack and control the gap.
The leading trio was pushing hard, but the bunch didn’t let them gain more than 4 minute of advantage. The peloton caught the escape in the finale and the stage was decided in a bunch gallop. Nicola Ruffoni (Bardiani CSF) took another win in the race, while Patryk Stosz again finished among the fastest, taking 10th. Jan Hirt completed the stage safely in the pack and maintained the overall lead.
Tomorrow is the last day of racing. It features relatively flat course, but a punchy finale to the top of hill near Wien.
