Tour of Croatia: Paterski still in the lead, Matysiak 11th on stage 4

After stage 4 of Tour of Croatia, Maciej Paterski is still in the lead and there are still 5 CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders in the top 10 of general classification. Dimitri Claeys took the win on the penultimate day of racing.

Belgian won the sprint from the breakaway. It was formed in the first hour, but it took many attacks and shake-ups in the front. When the situation settled down there were 4 riders in the front – Claeys, Gaetan Bille (both Verandas Willems Cycling Team), Paweł Bernas (ActiveJet) and Jure Golcer (Team Felbermayr – Simplon Wels).

Their maximum lead was at 6 minutes. Then it started to tumbled down, although not fast enough for the peloton to be certain of catching the group. CCC Sprandi Polkowice, as the race leader’s team, was riding at the head of the group to protect Maciej Paterski and controlled the situation. “The orange squad” didn’t have to get involved in setting high pace in the bunch, since the escapees were far behind in the GC and were not a big threat in terms of final classification. Therefore other teams, which were chasing the stage win, were working hard in the front of the group.

With 10km to go the gap was still around 1:30 and the leading riders could start to plan the last sprint. They had a safe advantage in the very finale and in the 4-man duel Claeys turned out to be strongest. Bernas took 2nd and Claeys’s teammate, Bille 3rd.

Bartłomiej Matysiak was the the top CCC Sprandi Polkowice finisher and was 11th.

Maciej Paterski maintained his lead in general classification and his four other teammates are still in the top 10 overall – Sylwester Szmyd is 3rd, Branislau Samoilau 6th, Marek Rutkiewicz 9th and Grega Bole 10th.

The race will be wrapped-up tomorrow with the stage from Sveti Martin to Zagreb, with a short uphill, cobblestone finish.
