Valentin Iglinski won the penultimate, eighth stage of Tour of Hainan. The Kazakh from the Astana team took the leading also in the general classification, and is heading for winning the whole race. The riders of CCC Polsat Polkowice did very well: Sylwester Janiszewski was the 5th, and Kamil Zieliński the 8th.
A group of about 50 riders arrived at the finishing line of the 8th stage, and the victory was decided by a photo finish. Eventually, the 27-year-old Iglinski won againast the Italian Daniele Colli (Geox-TMC). The representative of the RSA, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (MTN – Qhubeka) was third.
In high places the race was completed by riders of CCC Polsat Polkowice. In the 5th position Sylwester Janiszewski arrived, three positions lower Kamil Zieliński was ranked. In the leading group there were also Tomasz Kiendyś, Mateusz Taciak, Dariusz Batek, who took respectively the 34th, 38th and 45th places.
In the next group, which arrived at the finishing line after 17 seconds there were Paweł Charucki (the 45th place) and Bartłomiej Matysiak (the 46th place).
After seven days in the yellow jersey of the leader the Frenchman Justin Jules (La Pomme Marseille) had to accept the bitter dethronement and the loss of the leading in the general classification in favour of the rider from Kazakhstan. The leader lost as much as 24 minutes and he dropped to a further position.
The eighth stage was the most difficult for the riders, and the most interesting for the observers of this year’s Tour of Hainan. The peloton set off from the port town of Dongfand to the spa Sanya, where the race started a few days ago.
Astana showed its power today, from the very beginning imposing a very hard pace. The peloton got shattered quite soon and individual riders every now and then were left behind the column of the race. Among them there was the tired of the event leader. The tiredness, illness and powerfulness of Astana were that day invincible for him. Jules was able only watch how the advantage of the first group was growing. It all started in the uphill stretch for the first climb (54 km).
Astana went to the leading and selection started. All CCC Polsat Polkowice riders proved that they are a strong team and that they could afford a good result, staying in the first group, which then shattered and reunited again. There were 50 riders in it, and in such a composition they reached the finishing line.
The further course of the stage was taken care of the teams of Astana and CCC Polsat Polkowice, which cooperating harmoniously worked out some advantage, at the finishing line reaching over 24 minutes! Admittedly, the riders of the CCC team during this race are visible and they are working hard. Many of them are already feeling the hardships of autumn racing in the heat, dust, at the uncommon in Europe humidity of the air.
There is only one stage left before the end of the race and nothing indicates that anybody could take the leading over from Iglinski, although 14 seconds behind him Jense Van Rensburg is ranked. The third racer is Alexander Schmitt 19 seconds behind the Kazakh rider.
The 20th place in the general classification one day before the end of the race is held by Zieliński (+28 seconds), the 29th contestant is Taciak (+33 seconds), the 38th Matysiak (+4.06), 41. Kiendyś (+7.43), 44. Batek (+14.54), 76. Charucki (+31.49) and the 85th rider is Janiszewski (+36.34).
In the teams classification CCC Polsat Polkowice is still in the seventh position.
