Alan Banaszek kicked off Tour of Norway with 8th place in the opening stage to Horten.
Info: May 16th, Svelvik – Horten, 186km
It didn’t take long until the first breakaway of the race was formed. Initially it included three riders, but later fourth joined and together they gained 3-minutes on the bunch. The chasers were very precise at making sure, that the gap stays at that level and attackers are always within the reach. Eventually it was all over for the escape just after entering the first out of three finishing circuits around Horten, with 18km to go.
On the second lap Paweł Bernas made his solo move, but was brought back in. His attempt prepared the ground for Alan Banaszek though.
With 2km remaining there was a crash in the bunch, in which Bernas was involved. Thankfully he didn’t suffer serious injuries. That accident split the field, but Banaszek was riding in the front and made the first group. He was well positioned coming into the final kilometer and sprinted to 8th place, while Dylan Groenewegen (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) claimed the win, edging out Sondre Holst Enger (Israel Cycling Academy) and Jon Aberasturi (Euskadi – Murias).
