Michal Schlegel took 19th place in stage 3 of Tour of Slovenia which featured punchy uphill finale, coming in 41s behind the winner, Rigoberto Uran.
Info: June 15th, stage 3, Slovenske Konjice – Celje, 175,7km
Course: hilly, punchy uphill finish (final 1km, 6,7%)
After multiple attempts to break clear early on, quite a surprising duo emerged in the front. Two world class sprinters Roger Kluge and Marcel Kittel went away, gaining over 5 minutes on the bunch, with CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders.
They got caught at the bottom of cat 2 climb, with 23km to go, by accelerating peloton. Michal Schlegel and Jan Tratnik tackled the climb well positioned, thanks to their teammates, who did their work before the foot of the ascent.
Slovenian was unable to keep up with high tempo set on the climb and got dropped, while Czech held on with the top favorites. He lost contact with them when big guns launched their attacks, around 3km from the summit. They were not decisive though and CCC Sprandi Polkowice climber bridged to the main pack after the descents.
He approached the punchy uphill finish in the main chasing group, 20s behind the lone leader, Matej Mohoric. He got caught 400m from the line and eventually Rigobertu Uran took the win, beating Daryl Impey and Primoz Roglic. Schlegel who is not known for his punchy finish, came in in 19th place 41s behind.
