Tour of Slovenia: Schlegel consistent in the mountains

It was another top 20 performance by Michal Schlegel in Tour of Slovenie, who again finished in 19th place in mountainous stage.

Info: June 16th, stage 4, Ljubljana – Kamnik, 155,2km

Course: mountainous

First hour of racing was dominated by sprinters, who took all three intermediate sprints located on the flat drive-in to the mountains. The breakaway of the day was formed with over 50km into the stage and included 14 riders. CCC Sprandi Polkowice didn’t make the cut and were riding in the bunch, 2:30 behind.

Two categorized climbs – cat. 2 (Jezersko) and cat. 1 (Pavlicevo Sedlo) – broke the escape apart and also caused the bunch to shatter. Fausto Masnada reached the summit of the latter ascent alone in the lead, being chased by 4-man group and reduced field. Michal Schlegel was the only rider in orange who survived the selection.

The final climb caused another reshuffle, as all escapees got reeled back in and Primoz Roglic pulled away. He crested the last summit of the race as first and main group of chasers followed, around 20 seconds behind. Schlegel was not part of that pack though.

Roglic held on all the way to take a convincing win, coming in 33 seconds ahead of Matej Mohoric and Rafał Majka, who lead the chasing group across the line. Michal Schlegel arrived 1:37 back, in 19th place.
