Tour of Slovenia: Tratnik 2nd in race against the clock

Jan Tratnik capped off Tour of Slovenia in style, taking 2nd place in individual time trial, last stage of the race.

Info: June 17th, stage 5, Trebnje – Novo Mesto, 21,5km (ITT)

Course: undulating

Jan Tratnik was one of the early starters and at first check point, located midway through the TT, he set 2nd best time, 11s back. He saved some energy for the decisive part of the race though and recorded best time at the finish, 20 seconds ahead of the previous leader, Roger Kluge.

The time was passing by, but Tratnik kept remaining in the hot seat. It took nearly 2 hours until somebody bested CCC Sprandi Polkowice’s result and the rider who did that was GC leader, Primoz Roglic. He was 27 seconds faster than Tratnik to claim the stage and overall win.

It was fifth top 3 performance in ITT this season for Tratnik, who won 2018 National Championship and stages at CCC Tour – Grody Piastowskie and Coppi e Bartali.

After 4 stages my body was very tired and today I didn’t know what to expect. I still believed that I can do well though – Jan Tratnik explained. –I rode strongly and didn’t make any mistakes. At the end of the day I lost only to one of my best friends and best cyclists in he world, Primoz, so I’m not disappointed. It was one of the hardest time trials in my career, with lots of headwind and I’m happy to take that 2nd place. Also I want to thank the team, because despite so much suffering throughout last two stages, they still believed in me.

Also Adrian Kurek put on a great ride, clocking 25:47 (1:01 back), 11th best result of the day. Highest placed rider in orange in GC, Michal Schlegel was 30th (2:00 back) to complete the event in 15th overall.
