Michal Schlegel capped off Tour of the Alps with 24th place in the stage and 15th overall.
Info: Stage 5, April 20th, Rattenberg – Innsbruck, 164,2km
The final stage of the race featured a hilly lap around Innsbruck where this year’s world championships will take place, so riders could have a little taste of what it will feel like in September. On that day the riders did Olympia Hill three times, while in the worlds it will be tackled as many as 7 times.
The breakaway of the day consisted of eight riders, but they were not the main characters in the race’s summary, as they got caught with 30km to go. As soon as they were brought back in attacks started to fire from the bunch. The group broke in pieces and CCC Sprandi Polkowice’s Michal Schlegel didn’t make the cut.
After very lively finale Mark Padun (Bahrain Merida) claimed the win, besting George Bennett (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) and Jan Hirt (Astana). Schlegel was 24th (2:24 back) finishing Tour of the Alps in 15th, 4:52 behind the winner, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama FDJ).
