Michal Schlegel confirmed his good climbing form on stage 2 of Tour o the Alps, finishing 13th on Alpe di Pampeago.
Info: Stage 2, April 17th, Lavarone – Fiemme/Alpe di Pampeago, 145,5km
Course: mountain top finish (7,7km, 9,8%)
Arguably the hardest stage of the race featured 6-man breakaway, which stayed up the road until the final ascent. Since CCC Sprandi Polkowice were not part of that move, they could focus on protecting their leaders, Michal Schlegel and Amaro Antunes on the drive-in to the bottom of the decisive ascent.
Strong pace on the climb was gradually shattering the field and with 4,5km to the top, the main group was down to just 30 riders. Both climbers of Polkowice-based squad were still up there with the strongest. Schlegel kept up with them the longest, as he lost contact with them with just 1,5km to go.
Eventually Schlegel arrived to the summit in 13th place (+49s), while Antunes was 22nd (+1:30), behind stage winner, Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana). They are now respectively in 17th and 23rd in GC, 1:58 and 2:45 behind the leader, Ivan Sosa (Androni – Sidermec – Bottecchia).
