The queen stage of Presidential Tour of Turkey was won by Alexey Lutsenko, while Piotr Brożyna was the top finisher of the “orange squad”.
Info: October 12th, Marmaris – Selcuk, 205,5 km
Course: hilly (cat. 1, 3, 2), mountain top finish (6km, avg. 7%)
That stage didn’t only include uphill finish, but also demanding opener, with cat. 1 climb awaiting early on. Therefore it was not an easy task to get clear and despite many attempts the “orange squad” was unable to make the breakaway.
Five riders managed to get a gap and later on another three attackers bridged across. They maintained around 3-minute lead, but UAE-led bunch kept them in check.
Last men standing got caught as soon as the final climb kicked up, with 6km to go. The decisive ascent was not suited for pure climbers, but for more classic riders. Amaro Antunes and Paweł Cieślik, who are at their best in longer and more steep slopes, didn’t cope well with steady and strong pace and faded with 3km to go. Piotr Brożyna stayed with the first group the longest and finished the day in 36th place, 1:17 behind the winner, Alexey Lutsenko. New GC leader, bested in the uphill sprint Diego Ulissi and Eduardo Prades.
