How it unfolded
Patryk Stosz went away right after the start and with 20 kilometers into the stage his group established 2-minute lead. Muhammet Atalay (Turkey), Thomas Deruette (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect) and Paolo Simion (Bardiani CSF) were up there with CCC Sprandi Polkowice rider.
Peloton led by leader’s team, UAE Team Emirates didn’t allow escapees gain too much ground.
Stosz and his fellow escapees were pulling hard, but still leaving something for the finale. They gave their all to try to resist the peloton, but eventually got caught with 3km remaining.
The very finale was hectic, with few crashes happening at the front of the group. One occurred with 2km to go, when bunch of riders went down and another, more crucial one, in the last corner, when 4-time stage winner, Sam Bennett (Bora –hansgrohe) slipped.
CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders were able to avoid crashing and after splits in the field, Michał Paluta took on the sprint in the first group. He finished in 13th place, while Edvard Theuns (Trek – Segafredo) claimed the win ahead of Matteo Peulucchi (BORA – hansgrohe) and Francesco Gavazzi (Androni – Sidermec – Bottecchia).
Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) took home the overall win, besting Jesper Hansen (Astana Pro Team) and Fausto Masnada (Androni – Sidermec – Bottecchia). Mateusz Taciak finished the 6-day event in 20th place.
It was the final race for the “orange squad” in 2017 season.
