How it unfolded

The hardest stage of this year’s race, saw 6-man breakaway going clear soon after the start. Can Samlı (Turkey), Alberto Cecchin (Wilier Triestina Selle Italia), Ludovic Robeet (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect), Davide Ballerine (Androni – Sidermec – Bottecchia), Danilo Celano (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA) and Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani CSF) were part of that move and established 3-minute lead.

With 65km to go the escape split, leaving Samlı, Ballerini and Robeet in the front. The bunch pushed the pace early in the stage and brought the leaders back in with 40km to go. It stayed all together from that point, all the way to the bottom of the decisive climb.

When the road kicked, with 4,5km remaining, the main group started to fall apart. “Riders in orange” couldn’t make the cut and were not in the contention for the top 10. Mateusz Taciak and Piotr Brożyna were the team’s top finisher arriving at the top in 23rd and 29th respectively.

In the uphill finale Diego Ullissi (UAE Team Emirates) bested Jesper Hansen (Astana) and Daniel Felipe Martinez (Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia) to take over the race lead. In GC Taciak sits in 21st.
