Szymon Sajnok, who won track world championships in omnium last Sunday, returns to racing on the road, at Ronde van Drenthe (1.HC, March 11th).
This one-day race is held on narrow and twisty roads of north-east Netherlands. We can also expect a touch of cobbles and some short and punchy hills. Vamberg is the one which stands out the most and will be tackled 4 times. From the top of the last one it’s still 60km though.
Final 50km consist of one big (44km) and one small (7km) lap around Hoogeveen, where the finish line will be located. In total, there are 192km on the menu. The course has been slightly modified in comparison to last year. Also the category of the event has changed, as it improved to 1.HC.
The profile and specifics of the race suit fast and eager to attack riders. History shows that bunch sprint finish is very unlikely. Nevertheless 20-year old sprinter, Alan Banaszek could be mentioned among the favorites. His ability to read strategy and react to the way race is unfolding, is one of his and his friend’s, Szymon Sajnok’s biggest strengths. Thus, we can expect to see them at the head of the group in the key moments.
Frantisek Sisr, who finished Ronde van Drenthe 10th in 2017 will try to top that result. Also Jonas Koch copes well in such terrain, as well as Kamil Gradek and Paweł Bernas who both showcased solid form early in the season, riding strong in Dwars door West-Vlaanderen, which took place just few days back. Kamil Małecki, who participated in the Dutch event last season, will round out the roster.
The race will be broadcast live on www.rtvdrenthe.nl (from 13:45, alongside women’s race).
