Info: Stage 4, June 11th, Trnava – Trnava, 152,2km
How it unfolded
Piotr Brożyna was one of the early attackers, but since he was ranked high in the standings, the peloton didn’t let him go away. Soon after he was brought back in another group attacked and it included Artem Oveckin (Gazprom-RusVelo), Patrik Tybor (Dukla Banska Bystrica), Paweł Cieślik (Elkov-Author), Peter Kusztor (Amplatz – BMC), Daniel Turek (Israel Cycling Academy), Sven Van Luijk (Monkey Town Continental Team ) and Andrij Vasiljuk (Kolss).
The peloton was not too eager to give them too much space, as they were GC threat. CCC Sprandi Polkowice-led bunch reeled them back in with 68km to go, when wind and pace in the peloton picked up.
Another move came from Samir Jabrajlov (Synergy Baku Cycling Project), Henrik Hamm (0711|Cycling), Florian Bissinger (WSA-Greenlife), Kusztor and Vasiljuk. They stretched out their lead to 50 seconds, but got caught with 10km remaining.
It was all decided in the bunch sprint, which was won by Ivan Savitskij (Gazprom-RusVelo), beating Rok Korošec (Amplatz) and Matteo Malucelli (Androni). With 5km to go there was a crash in the pack, but Jan Tratnik came in safely in the peloton, securing the overall win and in the points classification. He was accompanied at the line by Piotr Brożyna, who could celebrate winning the youth classification and 3rd place in GC.
This stage was very stressful for me and the team, – it featured cross wind, crashes and fighting for positions. In the end I didn’t want to take too much risk, so I decided to go at the front of the bunch and do some pulling myself, to avoid crashes – Jan Tratnik explained. – Again our team did a fantastic job, so it’s not my win, but our entire squad’s. My teammates sacrificed for me and I want to thank them for that. Also the entire staff – mechanics, masseurs and sports directors – did an amazing work and it’s their victory too.
