Jan Tratnik notched his second convincing victory in 2018 season, winning Volta Limburg Classic (1.1).
Info: March 31st, Eijsden – Eijsden, 195km
Course: undulating (38 short and steep climbs)
I’d had big plans for this race. Last year luck was not on my side and this time everything went perfectly. I’d had everything planned out before the race and with 70km to go I decided to start executing it. I did not feel great after I joined the breakaway, but we kept pushing high watts and I saw that everybody was tired. In the end I almost crashed, as I rode off the road. I had to chase the group, but still managed to take the win. It was a perfect day.
After winning TT at Coppi e Bartali is my second consecutive win, which is a very nice feeling to win back-to-back. I want to thank the team, which protected me in the bunch, was working at the head of the group to reduce the gap and also helped me position myself for the attack.
The race was very lively early on, with multiple attacks. In the first hour of racing two riders opened up a 1-minute lead, but the bunch was not satisfied with such a breakaway. They got reeled back in quite early and that sparked another move and this time six riders were involved.
CCC Sprandi Polkowice guys were not part of that action, but with 60km remaining Jan Tratnik decided to bridge across with Jimmy Janssens. They joined the break with 47km to go.
He was one of the strongest riders in the escape, so he didn’t want to take any chances and attacked 10km from the finish. Oscar Riesebeek went with him, but crashed in the wet descent. Slovenian was leading solo for some time, taking advantage of his time trialling skills, but then he missed a turn due to slippery roads. He had to turn around and go after the chasers. He managed to get back in the game and take on the sprint on cobbles.
He launched it perfectly and took a convincing win, his second in 2018 season, after winning individual time trial at Coppi e Bartali.
