CCC Sprandi Polkowice has kicked off the 2017 season in a good fashion, taking 11th place in the team time trial, opening stage of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.
Date: Stage 1, February 2nd 2017
Course: 37,9km (TTT), undulating
We can be satisfied with our performance today. We finished not that far behind top World Tour teams and we managed to even beat some of them. Our squad was also the fastest among ProContinental teams – Piotr Wadecki, sporting director of CCC Sprandi Polkowice, said afterwards. – It was our debut in 2017 season, so the legs still need some race pace. We also need some more training on our new TT bikes, since we didn’t have too much time to get used to them. There is still much room to improve and I think that with the help of aerodynamic and biomechanics experts, who we’ve been cooperating with, we can ride even faster.
The Polish team – which was represented by Marcin Białobłocki, Jan Tratnik (both national champions in individual time trial from 2015), Maciej Paterski, Felix Grossschartner, Simone Ponzi, Jan Hirt, Branislau Samoilau, Łukasz Owsian – was one of the first ones to take off. It set the best time at first time check and the finish line. The final result – 45:32 – was the time to beat, until FDJ arrived and posted 44:47.
Eventually CCC Sprandi Polkowice rode to 11th place (2:15 off the pace), the highest among ProContiental teams. The “orange squad” was faster than Dimension Data and Ag2R, both of which are part of the UCI World Tour.
BMC Racing took an impressive win, besting Team Sky by 21 and Quick Step Floors by 49 seconds.
