Jan Tratnik was one of the early attackers, but his group didn’t get a green light from the bunch. He got caught and eventually the breakaway went clear without CCC Sprandi Polkowice representative. The escape of the day consisted of some of the top names in the pro peloton. Laurens DePlus, Philippe Gilbert (both Quick Step Floors), Lawson Craddock (Cannondale Drapac), Igor Antón (Dimension Data), Cyril Gautier (Ag2R La Mondiale) established a 4-minute lead in a hilly terrain.
When the bunch started quickly closing in on the breakaway and the gap was less than 1:30, Gilbert decided to wait for the bunch. With 15km remaining Anton was not able to keep up the pace anymore, got dropped, which reduced the escape to only 3 riders.
The trio got caught right at the bottom of the last climb to Mas de la Costa. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data) followed that win an attack. Colombian left Eritrean behind after few hundred meters of ascending, displaying great form and climbing skills. He took an outstanding win, beating Kudus and Portuguese Amaro Manuel Antunes (W52-FC Porto-Porto Canal).
Łukasz Owsian was the first „rider in orange” to reach the top, in 39th place.
