CCC Sprandi Polkowice made their presence known in the finale of stage 2 of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, while Jan Tratnik finished 14th at the line.
Info: February 2nd, Stage 2, Alicante – Denia, 181,8km
Weather: Cloudy, light rain, slippery
Course: Undulating, 5 KOMs (all cat.3)
Stage 2 got off to fast start, as for the first 30 kilometers nobody was able to break clear. Finally a 3-man group went away, including Johann van Zyl (Dimension Data), Cyril Gautier (Ag2R La Mondiale) and Hector Saez (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA). They were increasing their lead, but it didn’t stop Tom Bohli (BMC Racing) from trying to bridge across. Suiss rider managed to join the trio, making it a 4-man breakaway, with over a 6-minute advantage.
Unfortunately for Bohli the chase took its toll on him and he got dropped with around 75km to go. Around that time bunch split in two on wet and slippery roads and CCC Sprandi Polkowice had 3 of its representatives in the main peloton.
The pack came back together later though and could continue to reduce the gap.
On the penultimate hill, Alto de Montgo, Saez lost contact and Gautier managed to create a small lead on the descent. On the flat Van Zyl joined the Frenchman and together were trying to hold off the bunch, which was 2 minutes behind.
The duo gave its best, but it wasn’t enough. They got reeled in with around 15km to go and it was all decided on Alto de Montgo, which was tackled twice that day. “Riders in orange” rode aggressively and made their presence known at the head of the bunch on the climb, but eventually they were unable to make the final cut.
Tony Martin attacked on the ascent and went down the hill perfectly. The flat finale suited him and with his time trial skills he couldn’t let the win slip away. German took the solo win, beating Tim Lighart (Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij) and Primoz Roglic (Team LottoNL-Jumbo).
Jan Tratnik was the team’s top finisher claiming 16th place at the line.
