Jan Tratnik finished in 26th in stage 1 of inaugural race of 2018 season for CCC Sprandi Polkowice, Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (2.1).
Info: Stage 1, January 31st, Oropesa El Mar – Peñiscola, 191km
Course: undulating (one cat. 2 midway through the stage, flat finale)
CCC Sprandi Polkowice kicked off 2018 season in Spain, with Amaro Antunes, Jan Tratnik, Michal Schlegel, Marko Kump, Łukasz Owsian, Jonas Koch and Kamil Gradek in the lineup. With zero race kilometers in their legs, they were unable to make it into the main breakaway, which on that day consisted of four riders, who established nearly 5-minute gap.
Peloton was not too concerned about the leaders, as their chance of going all the way to the finish line were very slim.
Escapees got caught with 18km to go and bunch sprint finish was inevitable. “Riders in orange” were looking for Marko Kump to position him for the finale, but eventually they were unable to contest the sprint. Jan Tratnik was the team’s top finisher coming in in 26th place.
Danny van Poppel (Lotto-Jumbo) launched a long sprint, held on and took his first win of the season. He bested Luca Mezgec (Mitchelton-Scott) and Jurgen Roelands (BMC Racing).
