Victor de la Parte finished 31st on a demanding Stage 4 of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. Woet Poels earned a stunning win in Xorret del Catí and strengthened his position as a race leader.
After a very lively start and exceptionally fast pace in the first hour of racing (avg 49km/h), finally a 7-man group was formed in the front. It included Yves Lampaert (Etixx – QuickStep), Matti Breschel (Cannondale), Vegard Stake Laengen (IAM Cycling), Sjoerd Van Ginneken (Team Roompot – Oranje), Andrea Pasqualon (Team Roth), Aitor Gonzalez (Euskadi Basque) and Liam Bertazzo (Southeast – Venezuela).
They created 3-minute advantage over the peloton. In the hilly terrain, with 4 KOMs on the menu, the gap was being systematically reduced, mostly by Team Sky, who set the pace. Later also CCC Sprandi Polkowice moved up front and contributed to the chase and pulling the group.
The escape was caught with 8 kilometers remaining before the final cat. 1 climb. The summit was located 2 kilometers from the line. The race was decided on the slopes to Xorret del Catí. This is where Poels took off and showcased he is the strongest rider in the field. He crested the top by himself, maintained his lead all the way and captured his second stage win in the race (after taking victory in the opening TT). His teammate Beñat Intxausti claimed second and Ion Izagirre (Movistar) was third.
Victor de la Parte was the best among the “riders in orange”, as he came in 1:38 behind Poels, in 31st place. He sits in 20th in GC.
